Chen Cao: Selected Works

You are invited to join us for the opening reception of a solo show by Toronto based emerging artist Chen Cao, featuring a new series of Still Life's and Portraits. The artist will be present at the opening.

Thursday November 16th,  7 - 9pm

This body of work explores the idea of control and discipline relative to dualistic nature and cause and effect that manifest themselves within the technical narrative. Chen draws inspiration from the Dutch masters combined with eastern philosophy on dualism and simplicity to create portraiture and still-lifes. He is interested to address the relationship between matter and spirit in his figures as well as time and space, life and death in his still-life’s. Using painting as a medium Chen attempts to understand himself as a subject and attempt to convey universal truth and beauty.

Born in China, Chen spent most of his life in Toronto. Graduated from OCADU in 2013, exhibited in numerous group shows in Canada and the States. This year, Chen received the Ontario Arts Council grant to help fund the production of this show.

The exhibition will run until December 30th, 2017
