Widening Circles: A Conversation

"Widening Circles" is a solo show by interdisciplinary artist Stacey Sproule featuring new works on paper and embroidery. "Widening Circles" explores Sproule's universe of abstract geometrical and botanical forms and the oftentimes mysterious connections that are made during the spontaneous explorations of the artist's process.
In this body of work, Stacey has broken down her visual language into triangles, diamonds, circles, exhibiting a mastery of line and composition in her very contemporary use of media, ie. gold, fluorescent and sparkly pens that evoke both an elegant modernity and a timeless expansiveness connected to the spiritual form of the mandala.

"Because the (forms) reveal themselves to me in the moment that i'm working on them they feel sentient somehow, like the process is guided by something greater than me. There's a feeling i get in most of my work that there's an anchor point, a grounded centre and then an expanse that moves outward and eventually returns to the origin point to see that it has changed. I feel this in my relationship to it, and to the processes I go through to make work. "
The hands, birds, botanicals and embroidery work that Stacey has established a reputation for, make appearances in "Widening Circles", as though they are asserting their rightful presence in a universe of abstraction and expanding geometry. Sproule's widening circles seek to find a place to embrace both the abstract spiritual and the earthbound creatures and creative processes that have come before.
"I see my art as a time based-practice; as overlapping and interlocking circles, that eventually form a cohesive relationship between all of the different parts. With the passage of enough time and the getting to know a new practice, gives me the ability to draw the connections between them."Stacey Sproule is an artist and musician based in Toronto, Ontario. Her work revolves around ideas of self-healing and often involves the use of knitting, embroidery, and other tactile techniques. She is strongly influenced by collaborative and performative processes. She holds a BFA in drawing and painting from OCAD. --

I live my life in widening circles
that reach out across the world.
I may not complete this last one
but I will give myself to it.

I circle around God, around the primordial tower.
I’ve been circling for thousands of years
and I still don’t know: am I a falcon,
a storm, or a great song?

-Rainer Maria Rilke
